Police Used Water Cannons to Disperse a Group Protesting in Mirijjawila

Yesterday, Hambantota Magistrate’s Court issued a restraining order against 27 parties from protesting adjacent to the Hambantota Port. The restraining order prohibited protests, processions and rallies being held along five roads near the Hambantota Port for fourteen days.
However, violating the court order, a group held a demonstration in Mirijjawila this morning. Subsequently police used water cannons to disperse the protesters who were demonstrating against the opening of the Southern Development Project.
The Southern Development Project, one of the key initiatives of the government in its economic development program is scheduled to be launched shortly.
It will be carried out under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Mirijjawila investment promotion zone.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has said only 1,235 acres of land will be given from Hambantota to the Chinese companies for investment.
