SLFP to form a new Alliance with favorable factions?

It is reported that Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has been receiving proposals from various groups to quit the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and contest the upcoming general election on its own or outline a new alliance with favorable groups, and the Political sources stated that several proposals have been made to the President Maithripala Sirisena.

The Left Center, which quit Samasamaja and Communist parties during the Presidential election to support President Maithreepala Sirisena, has made this request from the president.

The North central Provincial council chief minister Peshala Jayarathna stated that the president would make an announcement in the near future about his decision to give UPFA nominations to former president Mahinda Rajapaksa.

UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayantha, in a communiqué issued recently stated that a decision was taken to give nominations to former President Rajapaksa during a party leaders’ meeting presided by president Maithreepala Sirisena.

However, North Central Provincial Chief Minister Peshala Jayarathna said that merely because the statement was issued by its General Secretary Susil Premajayantha, it doesn’t mean it was issued by the main partner of the alliance, the SLFP.
