Criminal Justice Commission to Punish Large scale Financial Crime , Frauds& Corruption ….
Special Assignment Minister, Dr. Sarath Amunugama has initiated Criminal Justice Commission (CJC) to accelerate punitive action against those persons involved in large scale financial frauds, corruption and misuse of funds.
The draft CJC proposal was sent by the cabinet to the Attorney General for advice. The AG in turn has informed the cabinet that the engagement of the CJC required a two thirds majority in Parliament and a positive vote at a referendum in terms of the constitution.
Minister Amunugama is scheduled to submit a cabinet memo in this connection to the cabinet today.
The proposal submitted to the cabinet for a CJC Act envisage meting out punishments two persons found guilty after inquiry by the CJC. The AG’s comments will be incorporated in the cabinet memo.
However, if the Supreme Court rules that the provision of the draft Act were in conformity with the Constitution and required only a 2: 3 majority, the Government would not go for the referendum, Amunugama said.
