Followed by a meeting held with rice millers at Presidential Secretariat yesterday , President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed officials to impose control prices separately for locally produced rice and imported rice varieties.
President Sirisena has insisted that rice supply should not fall short in the market.
He has stressed that there should not be rice shortage in the market and a mechanism should be introduced immediately to ensure supply of rice to consumers at a concessionary price.
He has also stated that the tax reduction on rice imports should be passed on to the consumer and insisted a buffer stock of one hundred thousand metric tons of rice should be maintained in government storehouses.
