It is reported that amended agreement to hand over the Hambantota Port to Chinese company will be submitted in today’s Cabinet meeting. President Maithripala Sirisena has appointed a cabinet subcommittee to look into all aspects of the agreement. This committee has called views from all three parties named, Senior officials of the Port Authority, Ministry Secretaries and Minister of Port Affairs Faction.
In addition on behalf of China, Merchant Company presented their proposals. Considerable revenue is expected from this Hambantota Port Development Project and 150 factories are scheduled to be opened within the Hambantota Port premises.
In the meantime, Port employees have notified that they will protest against this Hambantota Port agreement if it is implemented.
