GMOA’s Viel Threat of Indefinite Strike

GMOA Secretary Dr Naveen D. Zoysa said the government doctors had requested  the President to place the proposals put forward by the Minister of Higher Education to resolve the SAITM issue before the judiciary. But to date it has not happened .
Among several proposals made by theMinistry of Higher Education in April included a further period of clinical training in surgery, medicine, in gynaecology and obstetrics, psychiatry and paediatrics for one month each at Homagama and Avissawella hospitals for SAITM students who had already graduated. It was also proposed that subsequent to that training, candidates would have to undergo a mandatory examination conducted to qualify for provisional registration under the joint supervision of the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) and the University Grants Commission.
The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) yesterday warned that it would be compelled to resort to an indefinite strike if the government did not submit to courts its proposed solution to the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) issue.
