Local Govt. Election on 9th December? Election Commission
Although local government election could be conducted on 9th December, certain issues remains to be resolved before announcing the definite date said, the Chairman of the Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya.
He clarified it by stating that the Municipality, Urban council, town Council ordinance under the law need to be amended to pave way for it. Steps have been taken to submit amendment to the Cabinet by next week.
On obtaining the cabinet approval, it will be gazetted and placed before the parliament for approval. After parliament approval, it becomes a law thus opening the door to conduct the local government election in December 2017. However, as the G.C.E.(OL) Examination is scheduled to commence on 12th December, local government election is to be scheduled without affecting it, he concluded.
