Rs 100,000 Allowance for MPs

A supplementary estimate seeking approval for a sum of Rs 134 million to pay a monthly allowance of Rs 100,000 for each MP was submitted to Parliament by the Government yesterday (6).
In accordance with a Cabinet decision taken on 7 December 2016, an MP is entitled to an allowance of Rs 100,000 to maintain an office and Rs 22,500,000 a month is spent by Parliament for this purpose. Consequently, yesterday’s supplementary allocation is aimed at reimbursing the payments that have already been made.
Leader of the House and Minister of Highways and Higher Education, Lakshman Kiriella, submitted the supplementary allocations. In addition, the estimate also seeks Parliament’s approval for Rs 43,000,000 to purchase a vehicle for the Department of Project Management and Monitoring which comes under the Ministry of Finance, while House approval was also sought for Rs 17,638, 310 and Rs 21,500,000 to renovate the official residences of the Minister of Public Enterprise Development and the Leader of the Opposition, respectively.
