Appeal Being Submitted Against the Verdict Given in ‘Sil Cloth’ Case Today
Former Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga and former Director General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) Anusha Palipita were sentenced to three years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) by the Colombo High Court after being found guilty in the ‘Sil Cloth’ case.
They were found guilty of obtaining Rs.600 million in TRC funds and misappropriating them to distribute ‘sil cloth’ during the last Presidential Election campaign.
In addition to the imprisonment, they were imposed a fine of Rs.2 million each on the two accused and also ordered them to pay Rs.50 million each as compensation to the TRC.
Joint Opposition has taken steps to appeal against the verdict through President’s Counsel Kalinga Indratissa today .
