Tug of War over Constitutional Reforms
Sharp differences have emerged between the SLFP and the UNP over Constitutional reforms .
While the United Nation Party (UNP) wants to abolish the Presidency and introduce and an Executive Prime Minister , the SLFP insists that a president with certain Executive powers was essential for the stability of the country .
In this connection MP Nimal Siripala de Silva stated, that the SLFP will not allow the present government to abolish the Executive Presidency. But they are agreeable to curtail certain powers of the Executive Presidency.
The Deputy Head of the SLFP expressed these sentiments while speaking on the proposed amendments to the constitution that are being discussed in parliament.
