Allegations were levelled against the former Acting Chief Medical Officer (ACMO) of the Welikada Prison Hospital, Nirmalie Thenuwara by several politicians and civil organisations for allegedly granting undue privileges to prison inmates.
Lately, she was accused of giving medical certificates to Sil cloth famed Lalith Weeratunga and Anusha Palpita, and recommended them to be transferred to the Prison hospital, from where they were released on bail.
Due to wide spread allegations made against her by not only politicians, but by social organizations and her subordinate doctors in Welikada Prison Hospital, she had been transferred to the Colombo National Hospital on September 18 under a directive issued by Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne.
Although she was transferred out, the Prisons Department had already launched a separate investigation into the allegations levelled against the former ACMO. In addition Minister of Health has directed the Health Services Director General to submit a report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on this matter. Now the Ministry of Prison Reforms and Rehabilitation said, yesterday that it would request the CID to investigate the former Acting Chief Medical Officer (ACMO) of the Welikada Prison Hospital, Nirmalie Thenuwara.
