Soon CCTV Cameras in Selected Prisons

Prison Department officials came under criticism for aiding and abetting  prisoners  in getting  drugs , mobile phones,  other tools and equipment  frequently . Ministry of Prisons has considered it for remedial measures to minimize malpractice inside the prisons .

A top official of the Ministry of Prisons said, that a decision was taken  to install CCTV camera surveillance systems in selected prisons next week to enhance security.

For this purpose, full HD (high-definition) cameras will be installed at prisons in Welikada, Angunakolapelessa, Pallekele, Mahara and Negombo.

The project will be  first implemented at ‘Super Prison’ being built up  in Angunakolapelessa.  This  building is scheduled to be completed within an year.

 Once new Angunakolapelessa  prison is inaugurated that some inmates from the Welikada prison will be transferred to Angunakolapelessa, thus  reducing  overcrowding in Welikada.
