Important Meeting of the Election Commission Today

While the government is expected to conduct Local government elections between January 20 th and 31st, the Election commission meets today to decide on the election date.

According to the Gazette notification issued, there are 4,840 wards and established 341 local councils. 8,356 councillors are to be elected for these councils.

In the last election conducted on proportional representation method 4,486 members were elected for 335 local councils. Under new election method six (6) additional local councils were created.Accordingly, Akarapatana,Kottagala, Maskeliya, Norwood, Polannaruwa Pradesha Sabhas and Polannaruwa Urban Councils are the new created.
