Sri Lanka President Sirisena Seeks Interpretation Of SC To Remain In Power For Another Year
Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena has asked the Supreme Court whether he can remain in office for six years despite having reduced his tenure to five through 19th constitutional amendment, official sources revealed yesterday (9) . Sirisena’s letter to the Supreme Court seeking an interpretation suggests he wants to remain in power for another year despite having repeatedly claimed he voluntarily shortened his tenure.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to take up the matter tomorrow (12) and written a letter to the Bar Association of Sri Lanka asking its members to be present in court on Thursday at 11 a.m.
Will this move bring coalition partners of the good governance government on a collision course?
