Will Gotabaya Contest in the 2020 Presidential Election?

Joint Opposition leader MP Dinesh Gunawardena ruled out the possibility of Former Defence Secretary, Gotabaya Rajapaksa contesting the 2020 presidential election on behalf of the Joint Opposition.

He said the reason being that Gotabaya Rajapaksa is a citizen of the United States of America.

Having a citizenship in another country disqualifies one from contesting in Parliamentary or Presidential election in Sri Lanka.Further, Gotabaya  Rajapaksa is not ready to rescind his US citizenship “under any circumstance”.

In an interview given to a paper neither he nor Podiujana Peramuna Chairman Professor G.L. Peiris would be running for President in 2020.
