Rosy Senanayake Urged the EC Chairman to Implement The 25% Quota for Female Representatives in LG Bodies

Colombo Mayor-elect Rosy Senanayake, wrote a letter to Election Commissioner. Rosy emphasized the Elections Commission to take relevant measures to ensure 25% female representations in local government bodies in the country.
In this letter Rosy Senanayake said the Commission must adhere to the Local Authorities Elections Act and ensure the retention of female representation in every Local bodies in the country.
While issuing a press release, she said the 2017 Local Authorities Elections Act, which amended the Local Authorities Ordinance, was successfully brought before Parliament by Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe, and was the result of 20 years of agitation by women working on the ground.
In the meantime, Chairman of the Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya said, several practical issues have arisen to ensure the 25% female representation in certain Local Government bodies. So, recent amendments to the Local Authorities Elections Act must be amended in order to establish new Local Government Bodies.
