Army Removed 95% of Landmines in the North & East

Brigadier Sumith Atapattu stated that 95 % of the land mines buried in the North and East during conflict period  in 70% of land, was cleared and removed  by the Army with the assistance of four international organizations.
Landmines had been buried in more than 3100 square kilometres of land in the Northern and Eastern regions at the conclusion of the conflict. However, landmines have now been limited to 28 square kilometres of land in the region.
The Special Envoy of the Anti-personnel Mine Ban Convention Prince Mired Raad Zeid Al-Hussein of Jordan, who arrived in the island on a three day official visit yesterday, is scheduled to travel to the North eastern region to investigate the progress regarding the matter.
