Nine Trade Unions Object Postponing May Day Celebrations

Nine trade unions have issued a letter to President Maithripala Sirisena opposing the decision made by the President to postpone the May Day celebrations to the 7th of May.
The letter states that the decision to postpone the May Day celebrations as it falls on the same day as the Vesak Poya Day is not a fair reason.
Accordingly, the trade unions have requested the Head of State to not cancel the public holiday that false on the 1st of May and to ensure the right to celebrate May Day.
Convener of the Free Trade Zone and General Services Employees’ Union Anton Marcus said the May Day celebrations should be held on the 1st of May since all other countries in the world commemorate the event on the 1st.
