It hit near central Sulawesi at 5.02pm local time (10.02am GMT), according to Indonesia’s agency for meteorology, climatology and geophysics.
Authorities have issued a tsunami warning.
Earlier on Friday, the same area was hit by a magnitude 6.1 earthquake that killed one person, injured 10 and damaged dozens of houses.
