Two youths held for attempted abduction

(FASTNEWS | COLOMBO) – Two youngsters who attempted to abduct a 16-year-old girl were arrested by Kurunegala Police on Thursday (10).

The girl, who is a G.C.E. (A/L) student, had come to Kurunegala town from Anuradhapura to attend a private tuition class on that day (10) by bus at 5.30 am. While she was walking alone along the main road of the Kurunegala town towards her private class, the two youths who came on a motorcycle had forcibly attempted to abduct her. The suspects had snatched her mobile phone and later, one of them, over the phone, had demanded a ransom from the girl’s father threatening that the girl would be killed if the ransom was not given.

The 25-year-old suspects who were identified as drug addicts, are residents of the Pothuhera Police Divison, Kurunegala. It was reported that they had stolen money from three students on earlier occasions as well to purchase drugs.

A sharp knife which was used to threaten students who attend the private classes in Kurunegala town, was also found in their possession.

A police team led by IP Kapila Adikari, the OIC of Kurunegala Police is investigating.
