‘Govt. didn’t succumb to rice mill owners’

(FASTNEWS | COLOMBO) – Former State Minister Janaka Wakkumbura says the decision to increase the maximum retail price of a kilogram of rice is not a result of the government succumbing to demands of rice mill owners.

Speaking at a media briefing in Embilipitiya today Wakkumbura said while there were certain concerns over prices, a decision was reached in order to ensure there is no shortage of stocks of rice in the market.

Wakkumbura stated that instead of quarrelling with rice mill owners, they reached a favourable decision that will also benefit the public.

He said while the price of certain types of rice was reduced some saw a slight increase in prices.
