COPE Questions Islandwide Power Failure

To examine the circumstances  of island wide power failure and resultant loss  to the country, the Secretary to the Ministry of the Power and Renewable Energy, CEB Chairman and its Board of Directors have been summoned before the COPE on March 24th.

COPE is due to question regarding recent island wide power failure.

They will also be questioned in relation to why they failed to take preventative measures to avoid a recurrence of similar blackouts that had happened during the past six months.

Meanwhile, CEB spokesman said measures are being taken to recommence  operations at the Norochcholai Power Plant.

He said refilling of the water tanks at the plant will begin at approximately 5.00 pm today and it will be functioning from tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile, Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya confirmed that it is expected that power cuts could end by tomorrow.

However power supply was interrupted this morning once again in several areas throughout the island including Colombo and its suburbs.

The power cuts today were experienced as per the time table introduced by the ministry yesterday.

Consequent to the power cuts this morning, trading at the World Trade Center’s Colombo Stock Market was also temporarily interpreted for about half an hour due to a mechanical glitch that occurred with the WTC’s power generator.
