Request to Remove Honorary Professor Degree Conferred on Gota and Mahinda
Former Professor Laksiri Fernando, who was then in charge of Public Policy and Political division of the Colombo University had written on 11th October 2015 to the Vice Chancellor Colombo University requesting to remove Honorary Professor Degree conferred on Gota and Mahinda.
In his letter he stated that he was one among others who decided to confer Honorary Professor Degree to Gota and Mahinda.
After conferring this Honorary Professor Degree, Mahinda’s activities were not democratic. By attempting to capture 3rd term for presidency, he has violated the respect that the Honorary Professor Degree possessed.
Gota has failed to protect democratic norms and values. Hence, he requested the Vice Chancellor of Colombo University to make use of powers vested in him to remove Honorary Professor Degree conferred on both of them. He has quoted a precedent in removing an Honorary Professor Degree in American University during the year 1919.
