Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Faiszer Musthapha said that garbage disposal has become a national issue.
He requested people living within municipal council areas to provide their support to the government’s programme of segregating waste.
Municipal Councils in the country have decided to refrain from collecting garbage unless they are segregated from 1st November 2016.
We will be able to provide an initial solution through this first step because dry garbage can be collected separately and provided to recycle businesses, Musthapha said.
He said that they believe this may reduce the garbage, which is piling up at dumps by around 50-60%.
The minister said that most countries in the world have achieved great progress through recycling.
This is possible only by changing the mentality of Sri Lankans.
