The President Maithripala Sirisena has lost his coolness and resorted to tough talk when the Cabinet took up the issue of steps to be taken in respect of the Anti-Corruption Secretariat, whose mandate ended on 30 June 2017.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in a statement disowned the Anti- Corruption Secretariat and said it is not under him.
In turn the President had retorted that during the past one and a half years it, has not investigated the Rajapaksas or those, who had been dealing in financial frauds and corruptions under the Rajapaksas, but against 76 persons including local politicians, who expressed their support and joined the government .
President Maithripala Sirisena vowed that if the Police, Attorney General’s Department and Police Financial Crimes Division (FCID) are brought under him, he will show them how thieves can be nabbed within a period of three months.
The President had told the country’s top lawmakers that he had got authentic information about potentially adverse political repercussions against the FCID, the Police and the Attorney General’s Department emerging from probes and that if required he is able to call them up for a review of their performances.
However, no decision said to have been taken to extend the tenure of the Anti Corruption Secretariat at the Cabinet Meeting.
