Several complaints had been lodged with the government that hotels in the south refuse to accommodate locals in their hotels. They accommodate only foreigners.
Government decided to remove this discrimination by organizing raids to identify the hotels, which refuse to accommodate locals.
In this effort, raids will be conducted on Hotels in the south beginning today (3). Hotels in Weligama will be checked today. Hikkaduwa will be checked tomorrow (4). Mirissa on Friday (5) and Habaraduwa will be raided on Saturday (6).
Minister of provincial Council and Local Government has directed the Ministry of Tourism and the Provincial authorities to cancel the membership of these hotels which refuse to accommodate locals.
