“The Woman King” To Rule The Box-Office

(FASTNEWS | COLOMBO) – Sony Pictures’ “The Woman King” is reportedly on track for a projected $18 million opening this weekend at the box-office – in line with analyst expectations.

The $50 million budgeted warrior epic, which also opened on IMAX screens, has also achieved a rare honor – becoming the only film aside from “Top Gun: Maverick” this year to earn a rare ‘A+’ CinemaScore in audience exit polls.

The film drew buzz when it debuted in Toronto with a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating it’s a film critics and audience both love. Sony hopes that strong word-of-mouth translates to good repeat business in the coming weeks.

The Gina Prince-Bythewood-directed film tells the true story of a powerful general (Davis) of the Agojie, an all-female military that fights to protect Dahomey, a West African kingdom. John Boyega, Lashana Lynch, Thuso Mbedu and Sheila Atim co-star.

Second place is going to holdover “Barbarian” which earned $1.96 million on Friday (around $5 million for the weekend). That’s down 49% from its opening day last week, but the film should rack up $20 million in total gross so far by Sunday.

The Ti West-directed horror prequel “Pearl” looks to be coming in third place with $3.3 million for the three-day, down about 25% from the debut of “X” earlier this year. Fourth is the Sam Rockwell-Saoirse Ronan-led period mystery-comedy “See How They Run”, which is headed for an estimated $2.7 million opening. “Bullet Train” will come in fifth with around $2.6 million.
