At least 45 arrested in Unawatuna

(FASTNEWS | GALLE) – At least 45 individuals, who were accused of planning to leave for Australia illegally, have been arrested from a hotel in Unawatuna this morning.

The group was arrested by officers attached to the Habaraduwa Police with the assistance of the Sri Lanka Navy.

Police said all arrested persons are residents of Jaffna. Seven women and three children were among those apprehended.

The group had been staying at various locations for nearly a month in hope of leaving for Australia.

They had arrived at the hotel yesterday in a bus from Vavuniya.

They are scheduled to be produced before the Galle Magistrate today.
