The International Cricket Stadium in Sooriyaweva is being rented out for wedding receptions said Minister of Sports, Dayasiri Jayasekara in Parliament yesterday (23)
The Minister made this revelation in response to a question raised by UNP MP Hesha Withanage.
Accordingly, the stadium is being rented out for wedding receptions for a meager fee of Rs 10,000.
The International Cricket Stadium, built at cost of Rs 4.2 billion, has been utilized only for 11 one day international and nine T20 matches played so far, the Minister noted.
“The lack of hotels and accommodation in proximity to the Stadium is the cause of its low usage. If the area around the stadium is developed it would be far easier to hold matches there”
Minster Jayasekara insisted that the stadium should be put in use as substantial finances were used for its construction.
The Minister added that Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe had proposed that the stadium be utilized for training purposes and the option is being considered.
