International Worker’s day, “May Day “Today

Sri Lanka celebrates International Workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day, today(1).

Labour Day is a celebration of labourers and the working classes that is promoted by the international labour movement, and occurs every year on May Day, 1st May, an ancient European spring holiday.

The May Day rally of the United National Party will be held at the Colombo Campbell Park under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

President Maithripala Sirisena will be leading the May Day procession of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in Galle.

The so called Joint Opposition led by former President ,Mahinda Rajapaksa will conduct its May Day rally in Kirulapone.

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna’s May Day procession will be held in Dehiwela.

Meanwhile, the Expressway Operations Maintenance & Management Division said no tariff will be charged from commuters who use national expressways today.

The decision is a result of an order issued to the Chairman of the Road Development Authority by President Maithripala Sirisena.

However, Police have warned people to be vigilant of the speed & safety of buses that will be plying on the expressways today.

Meanwhile, the Excise Department has prohibited the sale of alcohol today in areas where major May Day rallies are scheduled.

The Department said these areas include the Colombo District, the Galle Municipality and the Nuwara Eliya Secretarial Division.
