Udayanga Notified to Appear Before Court

Sri Lanka’s former Ambassador to Russia, Udayanga Weeratunga has been noticed to appear in court next month over financial irregularities said to have taken place in a transaction to purchase MIG-27 aircraft for the Sri Lanka Air Force.
The transaction had taken place when Weeratunga was Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Russia at Mahinda Rajapaksa regime.
An investigation into the MIG deal is currently underway and the irregularities in the deal. Udayanga Weeratunga is a key respondent in the case but he continues to live in Ukraine and had refused to assist any investigations by the current government.
However, legal sources said that with the court issuing notice, a possibility will arise for a warrant to be issued via INTERPOL to arrest Weeratunga.
