First consignment of fish has been shipped to Amsterdam today (22), after the ban lifted by European Union.
Sri Lanka’s earnings from fish exports dwindled from Euro 73 million to 9 million as a result of the ban, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Ministry Secretary Mangalika Adhikari said.
She also appealed to the fishing community and the exporters not to allow this opportunity to be lost again.
The European Commission decided to lift of the ban on fisheries exports from Sri Lanka to the European Union, stating that Sri Lanka now had a robust legal and policy framework to fight illegal fishing activities. The Sri Lankan government said that it was facing a loss of over 100 million U.S. dollars per year because of the ban.
