Ukrainian Captain of Avant Garde Re Remanded till 8th August 2016

The Ukrainian captain of the vessel  Avant Garde was further remanded till 8th August 2016 by the Galle Magistrate Court, this morning.

He was arrested on 24th June 2016  by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Police, on charges of illegally possessing and importing firearms and explosives to Sri Lanka.

The vessel Avant Garde was found to contain five hundred and forty nine (549) T-56 weapons, two hundred and sixty four 84-S weapons and 204,674 bullets on inspection on October 6, 2015, while docked at the Galle Port.

Galle Chief Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura also granted the CID permission to photographs the stockpile of weapons.
