The Ministry of Finance has decided to increase the import levy on big onions by 15 rupees per kilogram.
In other words, tax on 1 kilogram of imported big onion will be increased from current 25 rupees to 40 rupees. Current market retail price of a 1 Kg big onion is between Rs 80 and Rs110 depending on the quality. This price will go up. Tax increase said to be to protect local producers, whose products scheduled to come Into the market shortly.
