R2I as From 3rd February 2017…

An Extraordinary Gazette has been published announcing the date of the enforcement of the Right to Information Act as from 3rd February 2017.

It was issued by the Minister of Mass Media Gayantha Karunathilaka.

The RTI Act was tabled in Parliament on the 24th  June 2016 by the Media Minister with the consent of all the Provincial Councils.

It was subsequently approved in Parliament with amendments.

With this enforcement, every citizen in the country will get their right to know the information they need from any government institution.

However, some information harmful to the national security, national economy, examinations, foreign trade agreement negotiations, personnel details, details of medical reports would have restrictions. The information can be obtained by the people in the three official languages.
