Rumours were spread in Colombo by vested interests, that there is a shortage for rice in Colombo after imposing price control on variety of rice. In order to carry out on the spot check to verify the situation, Minister of Industry and Commerce ,Rishad Bathiudeen has hatched a plan and got into action in the field along with price control enforcing Consumer Protection Authority officials and raided rice selling trade centres in 5 th Cross Street , Pettah ,Colombo yesterday (16) . In this monitoring tour, he has visited rice wholesale as well as retail traders and enquired about rumoured rice shortage in the market. They said in unison that sufficient stock of rice is available in their stores and trade centres and showed rice stocks to the Minister. Pettah wholesale trader’s association leaders spoke to him and assured Rishad, availability of rice at control prices. Surprise raids and Minister’s monitoring tour was covered by the Electronic as well as print media.
