Anuradhapura District United National Party Manager Dr. Johnpulle’s house was set fire in August 2008 during the North Central Provincial Council Election. He was assaulted while his house and medical centre were set ablaze.
The Attorney General had filed charge sheets against the Pradeshiya Sabha member and four others over the incident. The case was heard for a period of nine years following which a verdict was issued yesterday .
The two persons who set fire to the house of Dr.Raja Johnpulle, causing damages worth 50 million rupees, have been found guilty and sentenced to a 19 and a half year rigorous prison term.
The two found guilty are Former United People’s Freedom Alliance Mihinthale Pradeshiya Sabha member RAL Pushpananda and another.
The North Central Provincial High Court judge Manjula Thilakaratne ordered the two to pay a fine of 10,000 rupees each.
Three individuals were released from all charges.
The two were issued a six month imprisonment on the charge of being a part of an unlawful assembly, seven years for illegally entering the residence of Dr. Johnpulle and 12 years for causing damages to the residence.
The State Counsel representing the aggrieved Vishwa Wijesuriya requested the judge to issue a sentence ensuring the defendants do not engage in any further malpractice.
