Police Spokesman Clarifies Attempted Arrest of a Medical Student.

In a press briefing today (23) Police spokesman clarified the circumstances and the back ground under which police attempted to arrest Rayan Jeyalath, coordinator of the Medical Faculty students. He said that the CID was looking for him in connection with the tress passing and causing damage to the property belongs to the health ministry during a protest demonstration. Further, earlier the court has issued warrant and he is in the wanted list. CID used a van released to the CID for official work and the officers in civil uniforms tried to arrest him.
On questioned by journalists, why police went on civil dress and tried to arrest him without an arrest warrant? He said, nothing prevents CID officers to go on civil dress and arrest a suspect. Further, to arrest a person, who caused damage to state property, there is need to obtain an arrest warrant. It is well within the powers of the police, he concluded.
