A New TV Channel to Address the Tamil Speaking Community in the North &East

The government has decided to set up a new television channel for the predominantly Tamil-speaking community in the North and the East with the aim of fostering reconciliation.
Co-cabinet spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said at the weekly cabinet briefing held at Department of Government Information (DGI) yesterday (20), acknowledged that the second channel of the SLRC telecasting Tamil programmes is now mostly utilized to telecast cricket and sports programmes. Hence, Tamil speaking people are deprived of watching state TV. Hence, the government has decided to set up a new television channel for the predominantly Tamil-speaking community in the North and the East with the aim of fostering reconciliation.
To establish this new “Channel of Reconciliation,” 100 perches of land belongs to Meesalei Weerasingham Central College, located in  Chavakacheri  electorate in Jaffna has been identified. Cabinet approval had been granted for the proposal put forward by Minister of Finance and Media Mangala Samaraweera, to take over the land by Sri Lanka Rupavahni Corporation, said Senaratne. Technical equipment needed for the setting up of ‘Channel of Reconciliation’ have already been ordered.
 The government has decided to start the “Channel of Reconciliation” to address the Tamil speaking population, as it helps to build national reconciliation, he added.
