152 nd Police Day Commemoration Today

The 152 nd Police Day commemoration is marked today at the Police Field Force Headquarters in Bambalapitiya. Inspector General of Police NK Illangakoon is due to grace the occasion.

Police Media Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunesekera said a police guard of honour will also be accorded.

3,110 policemen have died while on duty during a period of 152 years.

Constable Sabhan was the first policeman to be killed while on duty in Sri Lanka.

He was shot dead on March 21, 1864 during an operation to arrest Saradiel.

The first female Police Constable was Yasomenike who died on July 16, 1989.

2,594 police personnel have been killed and 14 were permanently disabled, while 625 lost limbs during the conflict with the LTTE.
