The report by the three member committee comprising of High Court Judge Wimal Nambuwasam, Retired IGP Ashoka Wijethilake and retired Administrative Officer and Lawyer S.K. Liyanage regarding thw 2012 Welikada Prison Riot was handed over to Minister of Justice Wijayadasa Rajapakshe today (10).
The Minister said that measures will be taken to punish the culprits and render justice to the killed inmates in accord with the recommendations and instructions given in the report.
The Minister further said that he will only reach decisions and a course of action only after thoroughly regarding the committee’s recommendations.
The Committee began its investigation in early February 2015. The Committee compiled the report based on eye witness statements from Prisoners.
The Committee set on this course after the current Minister of Justice stated that the previous government had tried to cover-up the incident with a bogus committee.
