Although Co cabinet spokesmen Gayantha Karunathilake said in a press conference held on on 2.8.2016 , that the speaker had signed The Right to Information legislative enactment, Dinesh Gunawardane claimed yesterday that the Speaker has not yet signed the Right to Information legislative enactment and it was an attempt to mislead the public. Joint Opposition moved amendments to legislative enactment which was accepted by the Parliament and the Government. To include this amendment Attorney Generals as well as legal draftsmen department are having discussion for more than a month. They could not manage to find out suitable wording to include the amendment to the act to date. Hence, the Speaker has not signed it. Under these circumstances Government has misleading the public, he alleged.
In the meantime Speaker of Parliament, Karu Jayasirya reported to have signed it a short while ago.
This move was confirmed by the Deputy Secretary General of Parliament Neil Iddawela.
According to Iddawela, the Right To Information Act will now be enacted.
