5,000 New Three Wheelers a Month : An Impending National Crisis

Around 150,000 employment vacancies in factories cannot be filled due to around 5,000 youths a month turning to the three wheeler taxi service to earn a living, says Board of Investment chairman, lawyer Upul Jayasuriya. If this situation continues, it will adversely affect not only the local industries, but also around 1,600 million US dollars worth of investments signed after the new government took office, he stresses.
He says most of these job opportunities carry a salary of more than Rs. 30,000 and many facilities.
Commenting further, the BOI chairman says most youths turn to the three wheeler taxi service as they do not have an understanding of the existing job opportunities in the market. In order to rectify the situation, the BOI is planning to raise awareness among them, he adds.
At present, around one million persons earn a living through three wheeler taxis, and an increasing number of three wheelers get added to the field every month, and their income is on the decline, survey reports point out.
