The crisis in the North Central Provincial Council (NCPC) was triggered when UPFA leadership removed H.K. Nandasena from his portfolios, accusing that he showed allegiance to another party.Followed by this another Minister resigned and 18 members said that they are going to function as independent members in the council.Subsequently Jo demanded that a JO member need to be appointed as the Chief Minister.
Under these circumstances,in an attempt to seize power in the North-Central Provincial Council, the joint opposition is reported to have been engaged in obtaining affidavits from the 18 members supporting it before requesting the provincial governor to appoint one of its members as the NCPC Chief Minister. The JO leaders have planned to meet these members and discuss the modalities for capturing power.
Provincial council law states that if a political party holds more than half the number of seats in a council, then a member of that party should be appointed chief minister.
